Down with dramedy: American indie cinema’s adventures in being phony · For Our Consideration · The A.V. Club

Certain kinds of well-meaning, Sundance-approved films are too too eager to please, and too vague.

Fifteen years ago, I really liked these kinds of indie films because they felt new and fresh. Napolean Dynamite, Garden State, Rusmore etc. all felt very fresh and going to see them made you feel like you were "cool," because it was like you were in on some kind of comedy secret that nobody else got (which was the beginning of the "irony" trend that ended up becoming a way of life for too many people). Anyway: enough is enough. These types of films now feel stale. VERY stale.
